ADAM CARNEGIE - HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR
Adam Carnegie’s modern ways of working rub some staff members up the wrong way. Adam Carnegie’s love life has been chequered during his time at THE ROYAL, and continues to be so as the series unfolds.
KEN HOPKIRK - PORTER and LIZZIE HOPKIRK - RECEPTIONIST & SECRETARY
Well-connected in Elsinby, Ken is Lizzie’s father, and always has his fingers in a few pies. If you’ve got a problem, Ken can usually sort it out for you. Recently Ken has made the momentous decision to leave The Royal and move with his family to Torquay after inheriting a B&B from his mother-in-law.The much loved porter returns to the THE ROYAL, but sadly only to say his goodbyes.
Lizzie is Ken’s daughter and part of the Hopkirk clan. Following her divorce, she moved back home before finally re-gaining her independence and moving into her own flat. However, not everything has gone to plan, but now she happily lives with her friends in nurses’ accommodation. While enjoying her new-found independence, Lizzie hopes she won’t be on the shelf for the rest of her life. In fact, sparks fly when a workman does some repairs at the hospital. Lizzie is dizzy, but manages to keep the hospital running smoothly despite her unique way of filing things. With her dad retiring from hospital life, will Lizzie follow suit ?
JACK BELL - PORTER
Another member of the Hopkirk clan appears at THE ROYAL in series 7 in the form of Jack Bell, another cousin of Ken after he's left to run the B&B he inherits in Torquay. Jack arrives to take over Ken's job at the hospital, but on day one a problem arises - he's squeamish and faints at the sight of blood.
ALUN MORRIS - THEATRE TECHNICIAN / ODD- JOB MAN Alun’s a dreamer who in another life would have been a famous rock star. He’s the junior porter and the theatre technician. When he’s not taking patients down for surgery or assisting in the operating theatre, he’s usually helping out with general maintenance work. He invariably has a scam or two on the go and has been Ken’s sidekick in numerous scrapes.
MR. ROSE - VISITING CONSULTANT SURGEON
Consultant surgeon, Mr Rose is based at Ashfordly General. He visits on a regular basis to carry out specialist operations. He’s the sort of man who makes Lancelot Spratt look like Mary Poppins – a good surgeon, but lacking in interpersonal skills. He views the practice with genial contempt, feeling that Ashfordly’s new
GP's - Dr. JILL WEATHERILL & Dr. GORDON ORMEROD
Jill Weatherill is considered one of the new breed of doctors rising through the ranks. Striking a blow for women’s equality in the medical profession often leads her into conflict with Matron and Mr Rose. As GPs go, she’s progressive. Married to Dr Ormerod, their family is complete with baby Jonathan as well as Gordon’s two children from his first marriage. An ectopic pregnancy created a life and death situation for Jill with psychological ramifications.

Dr. NICK BURNETT
Dr. Burnett is the latest new arrival to THE ROYAL. Nick starts off on the wrong foot with Nurse Marian McKaig, but she soon sees a different side to him. Northern and plain-speaking, Dr Burnett has joined the staff at The Royal as a locum in the absence of Dr Mike Banner. Nick arrives without any firm plans to remain long-term, but it seems possible the attractions of a certain nurse might persuade him to stay around longer.
MATRON - HEAD OF NURSING
Matron has effectively run the hospital for twenty years in partnership with Middleditch, as Sergeant-Major to his Colonel. Since his retirement, she has continued to be a strict disciplinarian and is fiercely protective of “her” nurses. She is not afraid to stand up to colleagues if she feels they have abused their authority. Matron is stunned when her flighty niece re-appears as a nurse.
SISTER BRIGID - WARD SISTER
Sister Brigid is a nursing nun who hails from

A local and lively girl, Stella has a tendency to open her mouth without engaging her brain. She has sworn off men following a brutal attack after a party. However, will she change her mind when she finds out Frankie harbours a secret affection for her ?
She’s a great hit with Alun, but something about her awakens a protective instinct in Dr. Burnett.
Matron’s flighty niece, she is still a fairly new addition to the staff at THE ROYAL. Prone to flights of fancy (including spreading rumours about Matron’s health) Susie has now embarked on a new career, rather than continue at college, and has decided to train as a nurse, which will surely add further stress to Matron’s life. Likeable, laddish, and incapable of telling women the truth, Frankie’s had a chequered history at THE ROYAL, but now it seems he’s getting his life back on track. He’s back driving the ambulance after a short-lived career as a ward orderly, and has a soft spot for Stella. Will the path of true love run smoothly ?
